Does the History of The Old Scotch Collegians' Association lead itself towards Social Media being an Innovation Compatible with OSCA's Values?
An authoritative look at the history of OSCA can be found in Bruce Brown's book "With a Keen But Loving Eye - A Centenary History of the Old Scotch Collegians' Association, 1913 - 2013". Great Scot, January 2013 (https://www.scotch.vic.edu.au/greatscot/2013janGS/62a.htm), asked Bruce: "As OSCA embarks on it's second century how do you see it's future direction?
Bruce Brown: Obviously we are in the digital age, and young Old Boys live different lives from previous generations. OSCA will harness the technology of the time and enable them to stay in touch, not only with each other but also the School and the Association."

Scotch 60's Bruce Brown's summation above is further supported by Doug Lording's OSCA President's Report on the same topic, and highlighted on our Scotch 82 facebook Wall.

When Did The Old Scotch Collegians Association Drop the Scotch Family Motto "Deo Patriae Litteris"?
This question has been posted to OSCA's facebook page, but no reply has been made at this stage!
In a Great Scot article (https://www.scotch.vic.edu.au/greatscot/2010sepGS/09.htm), Scotch 65's David Ashton writes: "Our coat of arms is perhaps the most identifiably Scotch symbol of all...
This is a banner from East Melbourne (circa 1914–1921). The word Patriae (Country) was inserted into the motto of the school by request of the Prefects in 1914 to inspire loyalty to the Crown."

What do our Old Scotch Collegains' Association Councillors do, and who are they?
OSCA's Council has an Executive, Council, and Ex Officio (see diagram below of 2012-13 Council, compiled from the OSCA Annual Report -> http://oscanet.com.au/vic/scotch/uploads/files/OSCA_Annual_Report_2013_lr(1).pdf).
The Executive is made up of President, Senior Vice-President, Junior Vice-President, and Treasurer and the Council has other Councillors, who also are all Old Boys. There is also an Ex Officio, who attended a number of OSCA Meetings each year along with the Executive and Council.
OSCA has a number of Principal Activities that it conducts throughout any given year eg. Annual Dinner, Branch Dinners, Clubs Meeting, and therefore Councillors have an area of responsibility that they oversee.
Councillors set about helping achieve a number of Long and Shorter Term Objectives, in accordance with OSCA's Article Of Association, and current 5 Year Strategic Plan.
The President's dinner is held in October, and it's his responsibility to submit an Annual Report of the Old Scotch Collegians' Association (see OSCA's Annual Reports here -> http://oscanet.com.au/#annualreports). At OSCA's Annual General Meeting, Councillors retire and new nominated Councillors are elected.
Does The Old Scotch Collegians' Association Encourage Friendship, (Pastoral) Care, and Support Towards Each Other in Our Year?
Yes, absolutely! This has been a key Long-Term Objective of OSCA. The objects below: a), b), and g), along with OSCA's Strategy 2015 - 2020 (see "2015 Council 5 Year Strategic Plan" diagram), helps establishes the relevance of our Years Social Media Adventure together.

Apart from Our Year, Who Else Has Been Exploring Scotch Family, and OSCA Related, Pastoral Care?
OSCA Collegians have been playing an active part in the Life Transitions aspect of OSCA's ongoing Pastoral Care planning, assessing, and strategizing, especially as it relates to OSCA's Articles of Association. Below is an example of the importance OSCA Collegians' place in Old Boys participating in Pastoral Care and Support, as encouraged on OSCA's facebook page!
What Authority Do Scotch 82 Equal Admins Have from OSCA to Use Social Media?
Scotch 82 is a Social Media driven participation of those in our Year who are interested in helping our Classmates Reconnect, Reconcile, and Reunite with each other, and/or Scotch College Melbourne as well as the Old Scotch Collegians Association (OSCA), as we head towards our next 10 Year Reunion, "The Big One", in 2022!
A Proposal was put to OSCA in 2015 to start a New facebook page called "Scotch College Class of 1982" with Overarching Policies and Procedures or "Guidelines" for creating & running a "Scotch College Class of " Year facebook page/group being provided (promulgated?) by OSCA.
OSCA's response to issuing Authority to do so is summarized below:
OSCA's Response was posted to the now Transitional "Scotch College Class of 1982" facebook page, on the 23rd of October, 2016. In short, OSCA "Trust" Year Groups to do their own thing using Social Media, and see it as helpful between Reunions as a means by which Year Groups stay in touch. Other Years have also started Social Media pages/groups using a Trust principle.

OSCA's Response was also included in our 2016 End of Year Wrap, which is messaged to all our Classmates, using Social Media, to read and reflect upon. Classmates wanting to respond to this development are welcome to do so, and every effort has been made for our Year to participate and put forward a New Proposal if anyone so desires.
If OSCA Do Not Stipulate Social Media Policies and Procedures for Year Groups to Follow, then What Guidelines Does Scotch 82 Equal Admins Use As a Kind of Authority?
Since 2012, Scotch 82 has been using similar Guidelines to what were used by the General House Committee, and these have been developed and reshaped by our combined experience as Equal Admins, and are also open for private discussion in our Scotch 82 Active Admins (Secret) Group.
For clarity, our Scotch 82 Guidelines appear in a separate album on our Scotch 82 facebook page (click link to be connected).

Where Can I View More About the Transitional Scotch College Class of 1982 facebook page?
The Unsuccessfully Proposed page is now considered a Transitional page, and can be viewed in an Archived blog format, or whilst the page remains published on facebook:
Archived blog format -> http://scotchcollege1982facebookarchive.blogspot.com.au/

Does OSCA Consider Social Media an Avenue for "Pastoral Care"?
In considering Scotch 82 Care and Support, and how OSCA implements Pastoral Care, perhaps it's helpful to think about the differences between "Chaplaincy" and "Pastoral Care" in the context of Christian Thought on the subject, as illustrated in this graphic below
The Principal during our time as Scotch College Students, Philip Roff, was instrumental in changing the way Pastoral Care was thought of among Staff and Chaplain Archie Crow, by introducing a School Counselor.
"Pastoral Care" has always been a priority of the Scotch Family as articulated in OSCA's Articles of Association, however, our OSCA Representative in Mike Poynter is NOT our year's "Go to Person" for Pastoral Care, but rather we are encouraged to approach OSCA directly.
Our year has consider Supporting and Caring for each other using Social Media an important medium since 2012, and other years are also Supporting each other using Social Media too!!
There have been a number of important considerations about using Social Media as a tool for Pastoral Care within our year that OSCA have supported using facebook, as well as being able to answer questions posed by our year using Social Media messaging options.
Furthermore, in addition to OSCAnet.com, OSCA are actively engaging with Old Boys and promoting Scotch Family Community Building using a number of Social Media Platforms which, broadly speaking, in the mix of communicating with Old Boys, is "Pastoral Care" in the 21st Century.
Is Scotch 82 Social Media a Bit "Out There"?
Scotch 82 Social Media is a bit out there in a good way, and is highly compatible with OSCA "Alumni Relations" Life Transitions whole of life objective!!
Our year was the first Old Boys Year Group to explore using a facebook website/page as a way of reaching Classmates that appear on our Reunion Mailing List whom OSCA and our Reunion Committee would like to get a 40 Year Reunion Invitation to, with all of our Assistance.
How Many "Missing" Lads Has Scotch 82 Reconnected With Using Social Media So Far?
At last count 30 out of 61 of our lads are Reconnected using Social Media and we are able to send them a 40 Year Reunion Invitation, especially if OSCA are not able to email them one!
Where Does All This Talk About "Alumni Relations" Life Transitions & Support Come From?
In addition to the School Council and OSCA's Long-term Objectives as well as their Strategic Planning since our Scotch 82 Social Media Adventure started in 2012, we have been Supporting and Caring for each other in a number of ways Social Media has been a catalyst for.
Using an Equal Admin approach can be considered way less hierarchical than what we were use to at Scotch College during our HSC year in 1982, and a greater sense of Equality is being achieved once again for those who want to be involved as Equals.

The OSCA Life Transitions Objective is recorded in the 2012-2013 OSCA Annual Report: "The objective is to provide a whole-of-life Scotch community based on Old Boys giving and receiving personal support and friendship.".
"I'm Having a Hard Time Trusting Scotch! Am I the Only One With Issues?"
We, your Scotch 82 Classmates, understand and feel for you!
You might be surprised to learn you are not the only one, and we are willing to help you resolve whatever might be an issue - confidentially! We are not afraid to help you talk about whatever it is that might have happened to you during your time at Scotch, or since leaving school...
To this end we have created at (Secret) facebook group called "Scotch 82 Friendship Group", which is like a "Virtual Campfire". We also have a once a year Get-together that is a BBQ/Campfire "face to face" (between Reunions) event you can attend too, when you are ready!
